How can you keep track of your own mental well-being?

Growing your self-awareness is key to knowing when your mental well-being is slipping or in a good place.

Developing a regular practice such as journalling, exercising or attending coaching or therapy sessions can be great – but what about everyday life?

Knowing exactly how you feel on a regular basis – and being able to know why you feel like that, can help to stay on top of things. When you know what triggers you, what puts you in a bad mood and what makes you feel good; it’s easier to take action.

How many of us can honestly say that we really keep track of this stuff? How often have you asked yourself, “how am I feeling today?” or “why am I feeling annoyed?”

One of the techniques we go through in our courses when we look at our own mental well-being is a 3×3 method. It works like this:

  • Check in with yourself 3x a day;
  • Once in the morning, then around lunch and then again in the evening.
  • Ask yourself each time, to find 3 feelings, and what might have caused them.

It’s SO simple. But it’s effective. The more that you do this, the easier it gets to pinpoint how you’re feeling, and what’s causing it. Whether you take action to change anything – is down to you. But knowing what’s normal for you, makes it easier to spot when you’re suddenly really not feeling yourself. Or if you are more irritable than normal.

There are many reasons why you may not feel like yourself – life events, sleep issues, diet, health problems or work life. BUT – being able to build your awareness of what is and isn’t normal for you, will give you the power to do something about it.
